Dr. Vladimir Zverev, postdoc with the chiar of General Physics and Condensed Matter Physics, won the Scientific Battles in July 2014 organized jointly by the Moscow Government and the Polytechnic Museum.

On July 13, 2014 the 6th round of ‘Scientific Battles’ took place in Gorky Park (Moscow). It is the mutual project of the Polytechnical Museum and the Department of science, industrial policy and entrepreneurship. Dr. Vladimir Zverev, the post-doc at MSU (The chair of general physics and condensed matter, Faculty of Physics) has won the Battle.

The Scientific Battle is the series of subsequent reports delivered by young scientists (not older than 35) who are forbidden to use any equipment (PC, laptop and even permanent marker) to express the essence of their research. The ‘rivals’ can use hand-made stuff only. (ссылка на сюжет канала России 24).
Vladimir Zverev has been elected the winner (there were some 200 spectators). He presented the results of his research which is devoted to the targeted drugs delivery.

Different types of arthroplasty (vascular surgery with the use of stents, articular prosthetics etc) are associated with the risk of infectious complications, injuries caused by implants, as well as restenosis. To prevent such complications targeted delivery of biologically active substances (drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-proliferative agents) is required. Thus the delivery of drugs to a certain place at a certain time, as well as their controlled release under an external action, is the vital necessity for modern medicine in general and for arthroplasty techniques, in particular.

The best way to control the state of the implants’ coatings is the impact of low-frequency or dc magnetic field, which causes no side effects and penetrates through biological tissues without attenuation easily. The functional coating for controlled release of bioactive compounds in the external magnetic field, and methods of its application to the implants thereof have been developed by Vladimir Zverev, Ph.D. and his colleagues.

Functional coating is a composite material with magnetocaloric properties (the substance is able to change the temperature in the external magnetic field). Changing the temperature of the magnetic component causes a transition of a biocompatible polymer (which is in the thermal contact with the magnetic material) to the hydrophilic state.

Vladimir Zverev has been invited to the ‘super-final’, which is going to be held in December 2014. We wish him a success in this competition.
